What is Screen Printing

Screen printing is the process that involves transferring a stenciled design on a flat surface with ink, a mesh screen, and a squeegee.

Applications

Modern screen printing is done using high end automatic machines that provide speed and repeat accuracy. Screen printing is used best when a large number of items need to be printed. The setup process involves creating a mesh screen for every single color in the image. Once the setup is complete, shirts can be printed in bulk in a short period of time. This process is usually not provided when the quantities are low (sometimes below 24 or 36 items). Pricing is based on the complexity of the print. Number of colors, number of print locations, and quantity will dictate the cost per item. Usually, the larger the order, the lower price per print.

Special Uses

Screen Printing allows use of special inks that provide effects not easily replicated by other printing methods. Effects like raised puff print, metallic, glitter, suede, glow-in-the-dark, foil, etc...

Screen Printing FAQs

What type of ink do you use for screen printing?

There are several types of ink used in the screen printing industry, including water-based and discharge inks. At Houston Print, we use Plastisol ink.

Plastisol is a type of ink that sits on top of the garment fibers, rather than soaking into them like water-based inks. We choose Plastisol because it delivers more vibrant and long-lasting prints, especially on darker garments.

You can often identify Plastisol by the slight texture you feel when touching the print. It’s one of the most widely used inks in the industry for good reason—it’s reliable, bold, and durable.

How fast is the turnaround time?

Houston Print has a turnaround time of 5 -7 Business Days to complete your order. We rely on the customer to check emails and approve or make changes in a timely manner to keep this turnaround time. If the customer delays an approval or a change request, the turnaround time will likely be affected.

What is the max size on a screen printed item?

15" Width x 19" Height

IMPORTANT: As long as the area does not overlap a seam.

Do you guarantee perfect alignment on every print?

At Houston Print, we use automatic screen printing machines to ensure consistent, high-quality results. Before printing any customer order, our team performs tests on sample garments to check for print accuracy and quality. Once approved, the machine repeats the print until the operator stops it.

IMPORTANT: Garments are manufactured in factories by humans using machines, and they’re also loaded onto our printing machines by hand. While our equipment includes alignment lasers to aid precision, slight variations are normal. No two garments are exactly identical, which means placement might not be perfectly consistent across all items.

This does not mean prints should appear crooked—only that minor shifts are possible and to be expected with screen printing. Want proof? Take a tape measure to any big-name brand shirt at a retail store—you’ll likely notice similar variances.

Do you print on kids or baby-sized garments?

Yes, but we need to know in advance. Small garments may require different setup or DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing if they do not fit our standard platens.

Do you offer color matching?

Yes. We print with Pantone (PMS) colors upon request. Please provide exact Pantone codes for your design. If no code is provided, we’ll match it as closely as possible by eye.

Can you print on customer-supplied garments?

Yes, we allow customer-supplied garments. However, we’re not responsible for misprints or damage to customer-supplied items, as some garments are more difficult to print than others. As a machine is doing the "legwork", there is a possibility of machine failure during a run. For this reason, we typically have a 3% spoilage rate.

Can you design or fix my artwork?

Yes, we offer artwork cleanup and design services for an additional fee. We maintain high standards to ensure your final product looks sharp and professional.

Do you offer rush orders?

Rush orders are accepted on a case-by-case basis and may incur additional fees. Let us know your deadline when placing your order.

Do you have a price list?

Because pricing depends on quantity, garment type, number of print locations, and number of colors, we provide custom quotes for each order.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

Yes. Our minimum for screen printing is typically 24 pieces per design. For DTF or special cases, we may accommodate smaller runs—just ask!
